Measuring Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is an important aspect to understanding terrestrial and underwater ecosystems. Terrestrial PAR measurements can quantify the energy that drives photosynthesis in a greenhouse, natural area, or growth chamber. They are also particularly useful in agronomic and agricultural research. Measuring underwater PAR can help students understand the amount of light that organisms are receiving, which can help gauge the system’s overall productivity.
Through the LEEF program, faculty members can acquire up to two different light packages: the LEEF Terrestrial Light Package and the LEEF Underwater Light Package. The LEEF program also provides a grant that partially covers the cost of each package for any eligible institution.
The LEEF light packages guide students in taking terrestrial and underwater PAR measurements—which in turn can develop their understanding of photosynthesis and the radiant energy that plants use in their biological processes.
The LEEF Terrestrial Light Package includes a light sensor logger and quantum sensor. The quantum sensor is ideal for students in terrestrial-focused curriculums.
The LEEF Underwater Light Package can be used for both terrestrial and underwater measurements. Its submersible quantum sensor and lowering frame are ideal for students in aquatic-focused curriculums.
Each LEEF light package includes the LI-1500 Light Sensor Logger. Equipped with GPS and three input ports, data can be logged at predetermined time intervals when the sensors are connected to the logger. It can sample and log at speeds up to 500 Hz — fast enough to measure the flicker rate of fluorescent, iridescent, incandescent, and LED light bulbs. With its menu-driven interface, students can get and view results instantaneously on the display screen.
Use the LEEF light packages to teach students about plant science, horticulture, ecology, and environmental studies. Both packages allow students to study photosynthesis by taking measurements of the radiant energy that plants use.
